You are, and here she points at the three of us standing at the counter to pay, bogas. You know bogas? We do not know bogas. We know bogus but the way she’s saying it makes us think we’re not being insulted as we leave the restaurant.
She turns to a woman drinking a glass of red wine. How you say, bogas? The woman thinks. Handsome, she says. Yes, says the first woman. You three are handsome men. It’s our first night in Paris and already it’s hitting us with the one-two-three punch of fat and wine and charming compliments in a French accent.
Another lady takes out shot glasses and starts counting people. 8 glasses go down. From behind the bar she produces a jug of orange liquid which looks a lot like carrot juice. It is not carrot juice. What is it, we ask. It’s my special mix, she says.
What are three bogas to do? We drink the shots and stumble out into Montmartre, our stomachs full and our spirits embiggened.
