I’m standing in front of the book hatch closest to our home, holding a 1964 guide to California highways and trying to imagine how it got to this cabinet in Haarlem.
You can take them, the woman in the doorway tells me and makes a gesture halfway between a wave and a waiter carrying a tray.
Most of the books are in Dutch. I look at the highway guide. She looks on encouragingly. Slowly, I put it in my bag.
Two days later I leave it in another hatch.

maybe the real highway was the books we took with us on the way
Love these little book swap closets! There's a bunch of them in my neighborhood, I've picked up and left several books, with varying degrees of satisfaction. Danielle Steel is a safe bet: you can always find at least a couple of her books with gloriously tacky covers.
