9. Church
The Church of St. Bavo, not be confused with the Cathedral of St. Bavo, is the massive building in the old town square. Its outline is the de facto mascot of Haarlem.
Bakenesserkerk is a much smaller church from the 13th century. In 1530, for unrecorded reasons, they decided to add a version of St. Bavo’s gigantic spire. The two churches are about a 10 minute walk apart.
Because the second spire is white we call it the bone church. Also because it looks like it’s made of human bones.
